A Conversation With Michelle Willams

Posted by Ryne E. Hancock on September 7, 2007

Doc’s Note: This is the latest in a series of columns on sports at Crichton. These columns will appear regularly until the end of the school year.

Many times when we think of student-athletes, the first thing that comes to our minds are football and basketball players because they get plenty of face time on television and ink in various publications.

And in a city where you’re more likely to hear about student-athletes getting into numerous brushes with the law (see: Joey Dorsey or Jeremy Hunt), it’s hard to pick out, in a sense, positive role models who represent their institution with pride and dignity, putting emphasis on the term “student-athlete”.

Something that Crichton senior Michelle Willams, who ironically was a high school classmate of this columnist over at Whitehaven High School, exemplifies to a tee.

An original member of Crichton’s dance team, known simply as the Danstars, Ms. Williams has danced for Crichton since its founding in 2005 after two years of studies at the University of Memphis. In addition to that, she has been a part of the dance team for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, the now-defunct Memphis Xplorers Arena Football team, as well as the Whitehaven High School Pom Squad.

In a recent interview with Ms. Williams, she spoke of her time as a dancer over the course of the last decade as well as her time as a Crichton Danstar.

“It’s great because you’re not only doing something positive, but you’re also helping the community,” she said, referring to her role as a part of the Crichton Danstars.

Over the last few years, the Crichton Danstars have conducted community dance workshops as a way to follow the mission of the school, which is to encourage students to think logically, grow spirtually, and better the lives of the world and community around them.

Last year, the Danstars sponsored nearby East High School and, according to Williams, the crowning moment of their mentoring of the East High dance team was when, towards the end of the 2006-07 basketball season, the East High dance team performed at a Crichton home game.

“It was memorable,” she said, referring to the performance by East.

The showplace of Crichton’s athletic programs, the brand-new Streets Ministries Arena is located southeast of the FedEx Forum in one of Memphis’ poorest neighborhoods. Built in 2006, it has quickly become a tough place for opponents to play in.

“The atmosphere is just like the atmosphere at the University of Memphis games,” she said, “Although we are smaller than schools like the U. of M., we still have strong support from the student body as well as faculty.”

Ms. Williams also brought up the unique advantage of being on a dance team at a small school like Crichton.

“Some of the members,” she said, “are dancing on a team for the first time. Not only that, the diversity that is at Crichton can be seen on the Danstars as well.”

Williams plans to continue her dance career after graduation, hopefully dancing in the NBA for teams like the Miami Heat.

When asked what advice she would like to give to young girls, she simply said this one quote.

“Go for what you want and do what makes you happy.”
