Field of San Francisco 49ers To Be Named After The Late Bill Walsh

Posted by Matt on August 10, 2007

sp_walsh_2.jpg is reporting that the field at Monster Park, home of the San Francisco 49ers, will be renamed after the late, great, Bill Walsh, the legendary former head coach the of 49ers. Walsh finished his coaching career at 92-59-1 (.609) that included three Super Bowl rings in 10 seasons, all with the 49ers. Nobody will dispute Walsh as the father of the ‘West Coast Offense’ and as one of the best to ever grace the sidelines. Walsh past away to leukemia on July 30th, 2007.

My Take: This is all well good and I think it is completely in order as Walsh created a legendary franchise in San Francisco. However, I am much more supportive of bestowing these honors on people while the recipient is still alive. Now I realize that Walsh was probably a man who wouldn’t want such a responsibility, or the publicity that would go along with having a professional football field named after him, however, it seems to be a decision sped up by San Francisco only because he died, which is unfortunate. I’m sure Bill Walsh knew what he meant to the players and fans of the 49ers, but it would have been nice to have seen Walsh see his name painted on the grass before he passed away.

  1. I’m glad to see the Niners honor Bill Walsh. That guy was a genius when it came to running a football team. Without Walsh, there would be no Jerry Rice.

Just gotta wish those things come before the honoree passes, though, ya’ know?

Thanks for the interest, Mr. Chapman, I have linked to you in the “Friends Of” section and I’ll check out your blog and drop a line here and there as you have been a return visitor and we more than appreciate it.

Solid thoughts, too, no Walsh = No ‘9ers and you’re exactly right.
