A-Rod Blasts 500th; Becomes Youngest Ever To Do So

Posted by Matt on August 4, 2007

New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez finally ended the suspense today smacking his 500th home run against the Kansas City Royals and, more importantly, off of Kyle Davies on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 4th-inning. At 32-years, 8-days old, A-Rod becomes the youngest ever to reach the 500 home run plateau and becomes the 22nd member of the elite club, following fellow American League Slugger Frank Thomas who hit his 500th just last month.

Alex ended a 2-for-24 (.083BA) skid since hitting his 499th home run on July 25th that saw him record only 2-RBIs and 2-runs while the Yankee’s continued their climb in the American League Wild Card race.

I took the liberty of doing a little bit of math on the subject and if Alex continues his pace this season, he will finish 2007 with 52 or 53 home runs which would put him at 516 or 517 home runs, respectively, for his then 14-season career. That would leave him with an average of 37 home runs per season and if he continued such a pace for seven more seasons after this one and then retired, Alex would finish his career in the 775 career home run range, health permitting, of course. Thus, the plot thickens for the career home race for future generations.

Until then, congratulations are in order for Rodriguez for reaching 500 career home runs at such a young age and now we’re forced to wait for Jose Canseco’s second tell-all masterpiece, Vindicated, which will allegedly outline steroid use for Alex himself. And around and around we go…
