Leftovers From The Bon-Ton (7/25)

Posted by Ryne E. Hancock on July 25, 2007

As many of you “Nasty Boy” fans know, it has indeed been a busy week and a half on here with the Barry Bonds home run chase, Michael Vick, and Tim Donaghy going on.

Because of it, I haven’t been able to give rundown of what’s happening down here in the Mid-South as well as around the world of sports like I wanted to.

But since much of this shit has died down, then today would be a good day to bring some leftovers from the Bon-Ton:

  • On the same day Astros legend Craig Biggio announced his retirement, he hits a grand slam to help the Astros to a 7-4 victory over the Dodgers in what was indeed a storybook day for him as well as the Astros organization. There is no question in my mind he’ll be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer.
  • Impressed by former Redbird outfielder Skip Schumacher’s hustle around the bases to get his first triple of his career, too bad it didn’t figure in the win for the Cardinals over the Cubs. I’m sure “Bob Swerski’s” beaming with joy as we speak, but still we have a ring and you don’t.
  • Eric Crawford of Louisville Courier-Journal has a nice column on the NBA referee scandal that should be a broader scope of how bad calls affect every sport.
  • The ceremony at Autozone Park last night to honor the memory of former Redbird Mike Coolbaugh, who died Sunday in Little Rock during a Texas League game was without question, a classy act for a classy guy. I had the privilege of calling his tape-measure homer in 2005 while I was doing radio work as a Fan Radio announcer when he was a member of the Round Rock Express. My prayers and heart goes out to his family as they go through this trying time.
  • The Grizzlies added sharpshooter Casey Jacobsen, who last played for the NBA in 2004-05 with the Hornets, to their roster on Monday afternoon. Great job, Grizzlies. You’re going to find yourself in the lottery again this year anyway so just stock up as many losers as you can and hopefully you can enter the O.J. Mayo sweepstakes come May of 2008.
  • On a personal level, I just joined a Facebook group devoted to boobs. Maybe God’s trying to tell me something

My time’s up. Beautiful day here in Memphis and best of all, I got a chance to catch you guys up on the world of sports.
