Harang On Sloopy, Sloopy Harang On

Posted by Matt on July 8, 2007

You might want to fire up the state song of Ohio, Hang On Sloopy, in celebration and really hang on to something in case you have a heart attack regarding what I am about to tell you.

Ready? Well you better be because the Cincinnati Reds registered their first four-game winning streak of the year as well as recording their first series sweep of the year (last series sweep occurred July 13 – 16, 2007 in a four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies) after being the last team in Major League Baseball to sweep a series this season.

Still alive?  Hopefully.

The win took 11-innings and was on the back of Aaron Harang’s 8-inning, 6-hit, 1-earned run performance while striking out eight and only walking one.

A league high, season high 16-strikeouts by the Reds’ offense count not stop this win.  Three blown sacrifice bunts in extra innings (fundamentals people) could not stop this win.  And surprisingly enough, a late-inning meltdown of the bullpen in which David Weathers gave up two earned runs in the top of the 9th-inning to tie the ball game and force extra innings could not stop this win either.

The Redlegs head in to the All Star break begrudgingly as their momentum will be put to a halt that included a 6-3 record in the nine-game home stand that rounded out the first half of the season and helped to shave their deficit to 13-games in the National League Central.  Hopefully the Reds can pick up where they left off at the end of this week when normal play resumes to help make the second half of the season exciting and worth watching.

In the meantime, I’ll be firmly planted on the couch for the All Star festivities and will enjoy every moment of Junior’s 13th appearance.
