Saturday Morning News And Notes

Posted by Matt on June 30, 2007

Last night saw Aubrey Huff of the Baltimore Orioles hit for the cycle while Barry Bonds brought his career home run total to three-fourths of 1,000 last night with his 750th career home run in a week of milestones in Major League Baseball.  During the past week, Sammy Sosa become just the fifth member of the 600 Home Run Club with his 600th and 601st home runs on June 21 and June 22, respectively.  A few more members to reach this milestone and the 600 home run club will make the 600 mark the new 500.  Speaking of which, “Big Hurt” Frank Thomas became the 21st member of the 500 Home Run Club with his 500th on June 28, 2007 against the Minnesota Twins.  And finally, keeping with the statistical accomplishments, Craig Biggio became the 27th member of the 3,000 Hit Club with a five hit performance on June 28 to bring his total to 3,002 and put him at 26th all-time.

A big congratulations goes out to all of the players as these are all very nice accomplishments.

The Cincinnati Reds blew a 7-inning, 6-hit, 1-earned run performance by Bronson Arroyo (although it was nice to see Bronson get back on track) when three rookie relievers, Marcus McBeth, John Coutlangus, and Brad Salmon gave up three earned runs in the ominous 8th inning.  This brings the total number of runs given up in the 8th inning to 62 on the season behind only the 70 total relinquished in the 1st inning by Reds’ pitching.  The pitching starts “strong” and finishes “strong,” it seems…

A relatively slow morning in the world of sports as most weekends seem to be.  Check beck often as we’ll be on top of things if something breaks.  A preview for tomorrows NASCAR race to come late tonight or early tomorrow morning as well as the 6th Edition of “The Sports Shorts” dropping Monday morning.  The “Hottie World Series” should continue through the weekend with “Doc” Hancock so stay tuned.
