My Views On The News

Posted by Matt on June 22, 2007

It is Friday, things are slow, not enough for a full article but here are my opinions regarding big stories making waves….

Adam “PacMan” Jones has turned himself in in Las Vegas, Nevada regarding the two felony charges filed against him stemming from the February shooting possibly involving his entourage. IF he is found guilty after pleading not guilty, he will more than likely do some time in prison and I firmly believe that at least one conviction will end his NFL career permanently.

Ken Griffey, Junior is now involved in trade rumors regarding the Chicago Cubs. It is unclear whether this is a rumor coming from the Cubs’ end or Junior’s camp but I do not see the Cincinnati Reds sending Griffey to a divisional rival and the Chicago Cubs aren’t exactly in the Reds’ fans good graces. The only reason I even see this trade being a possibility is the presence of “Sweet” Lou Piniella but even then, the Cubs are not a contender in the same division as the Reds, why make a lateral career move? IF Junior even gets traded, I feel it will be to an American League team that is actually in playoff contention but with his ability to veto any trades as a 10-5 player (10+ years in the league, 5+ years with the same team) and his ability to be a big draw as he approaches 600 home runs, I just don’t see anything happening before the July 31st trade deadline.

The College World Series finals will involve North Carolina and Oregon State after North Carolina defeated Rice in back-to-back contests, which is no small task in itself. The Tar Heels were my pick to win when the Final Four was determined and I am sticking to my guns, North Carolina wins it all. Mark it down.

UPDATE: “Condo” also pointed out that North Carolina and Oregon State played for the College World Series title last year as well. This has has only happened one other time in the 61-year history of the College World Series with only other teams being USC and Arizona State in 1972 and 1973. If this is a trend that continues, however, even more people will lose interest in college baseball and it will become another collegiate sport where the same five teams are at the top every year (see lacrosse).

– Aaron Harang takes the mound in tonight’s series opener against the Seattle Mariners which is being touted as Junior’s return. First pitch is not until 10:05PM EST but I would suggest tuning in, at least for Griffey’s first at bat which will be right about 10:20PM EST. Will Jerry Narron start Junior in center field or even play him there any at all? Doubtful, as Narron is current grabbing at straws to save his job but it will be interesting to see the ovation #3 gets in his return. I predict a standing one.

That is it for the moment but stay tuned…lots to come in the coming days as trade rumors out of Cincinnati are really beginning to fly and Jerry Narron’s seat is about as hot as it can get right now. We’ll be on the horn if anything breaks…
